First, let me express my sympathy for your living conditions - It must be terrible to have to endure a dark room. I hope my suggestions will help to alleviate some of the drabness.

In my own experience, I have a friend who has two philodendons in her living room, and has had no problems with their survival, even though she is quite forgetful about watering and feeding them.

Other plants that don't mind darkness are Peace Lily, Snake Plant, Pothos, Aloe Vera, Ficus, Mother-In-Law's Tongue, Cast-Iron Plant, and Fern. I would recommend that you find a way to give them SOME light occasionally, however. Either use a fluorescent light indoors for brief periods, or give them an outdoor vacation in warmer months.
